  • Why does my peanut butter cup have a dry or powdery filling?

    JUSTIN'S® Certified Organic peanut butter cups are extra special due to being free of preservatives or hydrogenated oils.  This cleaner ingredient label makes them more sensitive to confectionery quality concerns. For this, we recommend that our peanut butter cups are stored below 65° F and kept away from heat or direct sunlight.
    Based on our internal research, we have determined that exposure to higher temperatures can create a less than perfect cup. Though these cups don't look or taste the way we would like, please note that they are still safe to consume. 
    We work hard to ensure that our candy is made and transported in temperature-controlled environments, but once it leaves our facility we cannot always guarantee that it is properly handled. If you come across dry peanut butter cups, please let us know where you purchased it, the best by date and lot code and we will work with our retail distribution partners to prevent this from happening in the future. We are also happy to send you a replacement coupon if you can provide your mailing address. 

  • Why does my Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup say "contains milk" when there are no milk products in the ingredients?

    Even though there are no milk ingredients added in our delicious Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups and the recipe has not changed, we did update our labels a few years ago. Our new labels now indicate “contains trace amounts of milk” because they are processed on shared equipment with our Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, which do contain dairy. While there is a sanitation process between each batch, the reason we made this change is two-fold, both deriving from our company’s primary fundamental – safety.
    Justin’s is very careful about choosing and selecting only the highest quality chocolatiers to source not only our dark chocolate but all of the chocolate used in our products. However, it is common practice for the chocolate industry to process cocoa beans on shared equipment with milk containing ingredients. So, while we are extremely careful, the chance of cross-contact exists even before we purchase the chocolate. 
    In addition to sourcing the highest-quality chocolate, we use the best manufacturing practices for safety and quality. Because our Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups share equipment with our Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, which do contain dairy, the opportunity for cross contact as we manufacture the peanut butter cups at our facilities also exists. We felt this precautionary message may help our friends who are extremely sensitive to dairy .
     
  • Why are my peanut butter cups discolored?

    If you are experiencing white coating on your peanut butter cups, it is actually the result of warmer temperatures causing changes in the cocoa butter and peanut butter center. In production, if the chocolate does not completely form together to trap the peanut buttery goodness inside the chocolate, it can leave this white residue/coating on the peanut butter cups. The product is perfectly safe to consume! 

    If your peanut butter cups appear lighter in color, this is a result of cocoa bloom, which is very common in nut containing chocolate candies made without preservatives. Exposure to cool temperatures following warm temperatures may affect the formulation and, as a result, this may cause the chocolate to appear whitish or even make the dark chocolate look like milk chocolate. 
  • Why does Justin's use palm fruit oil? Is it sustainably sourced?

    The reason that we use palm oil because it is a non-hydrogenated oil that acts as a stabilizer and reduces oil separation. This means less stirring for you every time you dip into a jar! Adding other liquid oils wouldn't stabilize the nut butters and would increase the oil layer at the top of the jar.
    From the beginning, Justin's has been focused on the responsible sourcing of all our ingredients, including our palm oil, and we are constantly pushing the supply chain for advancements in this area. We are members of the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm), which currently represents about 20% of the total palm oil supply. The RSPO encourages sustainable growing practices and human rights initiatives at the farm level, while promoting education about the cultivation and use of certified sustainable palm oil. All of our Certified Organic palm oil in our peanut butter cups is sourced from Central and South America and is certified under the IP supply chain model. The palm oil used in our nut butter jars, squeeze packs and snack packs is also certified sustainable under the mass balance supply chain model.

  • Are your products gluten free?

    All of our products, with the exception of our Nut Butter + Pretzel Snack Packs are certified gluten free by the GFCO with the certification stamps clearly displayed on the packaging. Our NEW Peanut Butter + Banana Chip Snack Packs are also certified by the GFCO. However, this item is made on shared equipment with our Nut Butter + Pretzel Snack Packs, which contain wheat-based pretzels . A sanitation process is performed between each production run, however, as a precautionary measure we include “contains trace amounts of gluten” for allergies and those avoiding gluten. 
  • Is your chocolate sustainably sourced?

    At Justin’s we strive for sustainability and conscientiousness in all of our work. We are proud to source Rainforest Alliance Certified™ cocoa for our products. This organization goes to great lengths to ensure the safety and quality of the farms from where we source our cocoa. Rainforest Alliance accomplishes this by defining the criteria for suitable labor conditions, educating and training its farmers, and monitoring labor practices on farms through the certification audits and specific studies. 
    Additionally, our chocolate is 100% organic, which prohibits the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, thus increasing soil biodiversity.
