Nut Butter Questions

Questions About Nut Butter
  • Do I need to refrigerate my jar after opening? How long will the product last after opening?

Nope! We recommend storing our nut butters at room temperature so that it is easier to spread.
The optimal shelf life of our nut butters is 1 year from it's manufacturing date. From a microbiological or food safety standpoint, our nut butters are safe to consumer past the optimal shelf life, however product quality will decrease the longer it sits past the optimal shelf life. As with any product made without artificial preservatives, we recommend eating our nut butters within a reasonable time after opening (once you taste it, that should not be a problem).

  • Why does Justin's use palm fruit oil? Is it sustainably sourced?

The reason we use palm oil is because it is a non-hydrogenated oil that helps dramatically reduce oil separation when added in small amounts to our nut butters and peanut butter cups. Adding liquid oils, like almond or hazelnut, would not stabilize the nut butters and would increase the oil layer at the top of the jar.
Justin’s organic peanut butter cups are made with 100% organic palm oil that is sustainably sourced from South America and is RSPO certified. Our nut butter jars, squeeze packs and snack packs also contain palm oil that is certified sustainable under the mass balance supply chain model by the RSPO

  • Are your nut butters dairy-free and vegan?

All of our nut butters are dairy-free. Additionally, most are vegan, excluding Honey Almond Butter, Honey Peanut Butter and our NEW Peanut Butter + Banana Chip Snack Packs, which all contain honey.
  • Are your products gluten free?

All of our products, with the exception of our Nut Butter + Pretzel Snack Packs are certified gluten free by the GFCO with the certification stamps clearly displayed on the packaging. Our NEW Peanut Butter + Banana Chip Snack Packs are also certified by the GFCO. However, this item is made on shared equipment with our Nut Butter + Pretzel Snack Packs, which contain wheat-based pretzels . A sanitation process is performed between each production run, however, as a precautionary measure we include “contains trace amounts of what” for allergies and those avoiding gluten.
  • Why is my nut butter jar/squeeze pack sometimes thick with no oil separation?

We apologize for the inconvenience and frustration. Our nut butters should always be creamy and delicious! Although we strive to minimize oil separation in all of our nut butters, the nut butter should never be so dry that it is difficult to spread or get out of the jar. If you’ve experienced this, we recommend noting the best by date printed on the jar. Next time you’re at the store, be sure to pick up a jar with a different best by date to ensure it’s coming from a different batch. Additionally, we would love to hear from you if you’ve experienced this so we can fix it!
  • Does Justin's offer an organic nut butter?

Our peanut butter cups are made with 100% organic ingredients. While our nut butters are not certified organic, we strive to source our ingredients as mindfully as possible and use organic ingredients wherever possible. If you have any additional questions, we’d love to hear your thoughts!
  • Where can I buy Justin's if I live outside of the U.S.?
